Cortical neurons in vivo show a highlyirregular spontaneous discharge activity, characterized bya gamma statistics and coef?cient of variation around unity. Modelling studies showed that this irregularityis a consequence of the high-conductance state caused bythe ongoing activityin the cortical network. Here, we investigate to which extent this high discharge variabilitycan be reproduced in vitro using current noise injection. In agreement with numerical studies, we found that equalizing the time constant of the noisyinput with the membrane time constant maylead to an irregular discharge activitywhich, however, departs from a gamma statistics.
