 Les Gymnotidés et Mormyridés sont des poissons téléostéens d¹eau douce qui ont un système électrosensoriel avec lequel ils explorent leur milieu aquatique et effectuent une communication intraspécifique. Chez les Mormyridés, ce sytème comporte un organe électrique qui émet de façon permanente et crée un champ électrique autour du corps du poisson ; toute déformation de ce champ est détectée par des électrorécepteurs cutanées qui transmettront l¹information au cerveau afin de l¹analyser. Ces poissons ont ainsi développé un « sens électrique ».

En maintenant la reproduction en aquarium de plusieurs espèces de Mormyridés, que nous réalisons grâce à la collaboration de F. Kirschbaum (Professeur à l¹Université de Berlin), nous pouvons étudier le développement du  système électrosensoriel de ces poissons. Cette étude nous a permis de montrer récemment l¹existence d¹électrorécepteurs larvaires présents uniquement dans l¹épiderme des jeunes alevins. Ainsi les alevins de Mormyridés développent un système électrosensoriel larvaire complet comprenant un organe électrique larvaire -découvert dans les années 70- et des électroécepteurs larvaires dont on ne soupçonnait pas l¹existence.

Lorsque les alevins atteignent les 80 jours le système électrosensoriel qui sera fonctionnel chez les adultes se différencie alors que tout le système larvaire dégénère.
