Activity of 109 neurons recorded simultaneously in the hippocampus of the rat during slow-wave sleep

My research centers on information processing in the central nervous system of the awake behaving rat. My goal is to understand the spatio-temporal organization of the neuronal activity generated by natural sensory stimuli, in different cognitive contexts and during learning. To this end, I am developing massive unit recording in the somatosensory cortex of the awake rat engaged in a discrimination task. The simultaneous activity of fifty to one hundred of neurons or more will be analyzed using new computational techniques, derived from information theory and complex sytems analysis. We will particularly focus on modifications of cortical information processing depending on the network state and on the activation of the ascending neuromodulatory systems. I arrived at UNIC in December 2007 to start this project in the team of Daniel Shulz.
Prior to this, I completed my PhD thesis from 1997 to 2002 at UNIC with Daniel Shulz. I studied short- and long-term modifications of neuronal activity in the visual and somatosensory primary cortices dependent on the activation of the ascending neuromodulatory systems, functioning as gate signals. In the barrel cortex of the anesthetized rat, we discovered a cellular analogue of state-dependent plasticity: a cellular plasticity in which the selectivity to the temporal frequency of stimulation depends on the presence of acetylcholine. From 2002 to 2007, I worked in the laboratory of Pr. Matt Wilson (MIT, Cambridge, USA) on the role of reactivation of sequences in the hippocampus during sleep for memory consolidation, these sequences being initially formed during exploration of a new environment. These studies are still undergoing analysis.
